Today I’m very excited to announce the launch of both my first book and my personal wine consultation service, bringing Rational Wine into the commercial stage.

This is the culmination of many months of effort and research, with the ultimate aim of helping the budding wine enthusiast to expand their knowledge and enjoyment of wine.

The 7 Key Wine Concepts E-Book Package

Despite how overcomplicated the world of wine seems, I truly feel that it is simple to understand.

It’s said that the mark of true understanding is being able to teach others and pass along your knowledge, so I set about to do just that.

The 7 Key Wine Concepts is the result of months of effort attempting to distil my understanding of wines into a format that would be easily accessible for the wine neophyte.

I did not choose the number seven initially, because at the beginning I thought it was important to cover everything. For example, I had even drafted up chapters discussing terroir, brand names, marketing strategies and soil types. (This eventually became the basis of the article “The 5 Most Trivial Wine Concepts”).

It was when I got to the stage of researching the elemental make-up of dirt that I stopped to think. As I was writing about the iron, silicon and calcium content of various soil types I began to wonder – is this really going to increase the enjoyment of the budding wine enthusiast?

One does not accumulate but eliminate. It is not daily increase but daily decrease. The height of cultivation always runs to simplicity.

– Bruce Lee

I decided that the answer was “no”, scrapped that chapter and many others. What was left over from the purge became “The 7 Key Wine Concepts”.

“The 7 Key Wine Concepts” are the most important factors that will most strongly affect how you enjoy wine. Even if you ignored everything else, focusing on these seven points will set you a long way on your path to discovery.

Once you have achieve a level of comfort with these seven factors, you can feel free to explore other more esoteric aspects such as vintage charts and soil types – this should be the natural progression of learning, understanding the fundamentals before going into the more arcane details.

To make it more accessible, I have also made The 7 Key Wine Concepts available in multiple formats – PDF for computers, MOBI for Kindle and EPUB for Kobo and other e-book readers.

Consult Wine – Personal Wine Consultations

For a long time I have felt there is a large gap in the wine market that has been ignored for far too long, most likely because the established players in the industry believe it would be too challenging.

Restaurants have sommeliers, winemakers have consultants and distributors have salesmen and marketers. What does the average wine enthusiast have? Critics? There are also wine dinners and courses, but both have their flaws.

A wine dinner may allow you to taste a large number of wines in tandem, but because it is more of a social event your attention is more likely to be taken away from the wines themselves, being compelled to make conversation and exchange business cards. Great for networking, not so much for actually learning about wine.

The most comprehensive wine courses require that you take days out of your busy life in order to attend classes over a few months. Most of us probably do not have that luxury – can you imagine going up to your supervisor and telling them you need Thursday off work for the next three months just to learn about wine? Add to that the pressure of final exams, both practical and theory, and this could translate into a bad time for the unprepared.

My Personal Wine Consultations solves both problems. You will receive a comprehensive report that will guide you on your path to wine discovery, based on your individual tastes and preferences. Instead of a final exam, there is only a short five-minute survey form, where your responses will be analysed and used to craft your very own Personal Wine Profile.

Lastly, instead of waiting several weeks for your exam results to come out, each Personal Wine Consultation will be completed within 24 hours, guaranteed.

BONUS – Personal Wine Consultations come with a free copy of The 7 Key Wine Concepts package.
